  1. I won’t downplay this light – it has a great list of features. However, if you want just as much light in the exact same package, but without any fancy programming, you can pick up very bright LED keychain lights for under a dollar. My local electronics store sells ‘em by the register as an almost-free gift. The one on my keychain is a no-name brand, probably from China, and the LED is blindingly bright.

  2. This is just a fantastic product. I am very proud of the fact it shows incredible American ingenuity and is made on our shores. You may not believe this, but I bought the original Micro-Light back in 1998 and I am still carrying it. Not only am I carrying it, but it has the ORIGINAL FACTORY SUPPLIED BATTERIES! Yes, it still works perfectly after dozens of drops on the concrete, old batteries and a switch that works flawlessly after 11 years. The light has dimmed slightly, but it proves that these are superbly crafted pieces.

I’ll also say this — my new model, the Freedom, makes the older one seem like a 1980′s Radio Shack TRS 80 computer! The dimming feature is simply amazing, not to mention the safety modes, e.g. — SOS and flashing beacon. As a consultant on security issues, I’ll flatly state that this little light is a MUST, an absolute MUST for any prepared individual. It could quite literally save your life — and it hangs on your keychain. Not a single downside to having one with you at all times.

Lastly, I strongly encourage everybody to support first class, innovative American companies like this one. Do you realize they have a lifetime guarantee on this very inexpensive piece of high tech equipment? Other than batteries (which I’ve proven are seldom in need of replacement — for lighter use of course) and abuse, they will stand behind this product as long as you own it.

I want to do everything I can to make sure this great company keeps making such excellent products, and that their employees keep their jobs right here in AMERICA! Please help by buying a Freedom or three — a perfect gift for those who appreciate the really good stuff.

And don’t forget the security aspect either. I promise you that you will wonder how and why you ever got along without one. Should you ever get stuck in a ditch and can’t walk out — you’ll be glad you had an emergency beacon on you — one that is visible for a mile (this is a real light, not a toy.) You can get cheaper copies, no question, but you will regret it. Don’t even think about it — get this quality one ASAP!

The basic light works & increases/decreases in candlepower with a firm press of the single button control. All other functions such as S.O.S.; Slow Beacon; Medium Beacon; Fast Flash & use for Morse Code are non-existent.The light operates for about 10 seconds before auto turn-off. It does not operate in a sustained light mode. The ad shows it being used as an identifier with the LED keychain. As long as you were able to keep pressing the button, it could be used that way. Not convenient at all. This is in no way a miniature flashlight!

Over the years I’ve bought keychain flashlights from many vendors (Sharper Image, several generic brands, etc.) and none of them are as durable as this one, it’s simply the best.

This is a great micro-size flashlight. I haven’t found another that is as small, weighs as little, and throws so much light. It’s very durable – I’ve been carrying the same one in my pocket for at least two years. That said, I find the control button cumbersome to use for anything except turning it on and off. Getting it to dim and strobe takes too much time. I often have to go through the varies modes twice, before I get it into the mode I want.

The Photon III had a superior control interface, in my opinion. The on/off/mode button was dual function. Holding down the front side of the button gave maximum brightness. Pressing down on the back side of the button turned the light on and off, and holding down the back button would cycle it through the dimmer and strobe modes. It was easy to find the mode you wanted, and best of all the light remembered the last mode you were in. I could get to fast strobe mode instantly. I think the Freedom Micro’s control system was a step in the wrong direction.
