The high low and low high fighting strategy is an effective self-defense, mma and martial arts strategy for defeating your opponent or attacker. What is this street fighting effective tactic and what are the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating it for self-defense and martial sports...?

What Is The High-Low Low-High Fighting Strategy?

The High-Low Low-High fighting strategy as it pertains to martial arts, street fighting, self-defense and other martial arts sports and martial arts activities is a method in which the fighter attempts to confuse his/her opponent or attacker with attacking combination in which the target areas on the attacker or opponent vary with each single attacking technique from a high target on your opponent or attacker to a low target on your opponent or attacker or from a low target on your attacker to a high target on your attacker.

That Was Long. Can You Give Some Examples of The High-Low Low-High Fighting Strategy?

Of course. Assuming you know what these techniques are, here are some high low or low high combinations. For the purpose of this martial arts and street fighting article we will stick with two attacking technique combinations, though multiple attacking techniques are recommended during a life-threatening self-defense situation, street fight or mixed martial arts event.

Warning: These are general attacking combinations. Some attacking techniques may be illegal in martial arts sporting events. These attacking techniques should only be practiced under the guidance of a qualified martial arts or self-defense instructor:

Front jab to the head – rear-hand body punch to the solar plexus

Front kick to the knee – backfist to the nose

Finger jab to the eye – front roundhouse kick to the groin

Hook kick sweep to the ankle – knife-hand strike to the back of the neck

Getting the idea now? Remember to see my warning above.

What Are The Advantages of The High-Low Low-High Fighting Strategy?

Mma fighters, and martial arts sports practitioners including boxers know the advantages to this classical fighting strategy.

Flexibility – This fighting strategy works with weapons or hand to hand. Even hand to weapon or weapon to hand.

Surprise – Especially if you're in a street fight or self-defense situation and your attacker has not ever seen your fighting style, this could end the street fight or self-defense situation very quickly

Intermediate Use – This fighting strategy does not require advanced training. Once the martial arts student has gained knowledge of attacking techniques, this strategy can be added to his/her repertoire

Simple Techniques – The attacking techniques don't have to be flashy or complicated. It's the combination of the attacking techniques that are designed to confuse your opponent or attacker into moving his/her arms out of a defensive position.

What are The Disadvantages of The High-Low Low-High Fighting Strategy?

The pattern can be ingrained! - I'm guilty of ingraining this in one of my own students many years ago. We were sparring when I realized the high-low and low-high strategy was in almost every attacking combination he initiated. Caution is advised to both martial art instructors and martial arts students.

The pattern can be recognized by your opponent – In a street fight or a self-defense situation this won't be a problem, but if you're an mma fighter or other martial arts sports competitor, your opponents have time to study your fighting style. Even videos may have been made of you while you're competing!

Conclusion

There are several factors to determine how to incorporate this fighting strategy into your martial arts or martial arts sports training. At the very least practice it until you're less likely to be taken in by it whether you're training for self-defense or sporting competition.

A Navigation device commonly known as a global positioning system is used to track locations, either where you currently stand or where you want to go. Now the latest gps to hit the market is the c330 Garmin gps manufactured by the Garmin Company and commonly called the Street Pilot. As the common name suggests, this device is as good as a pilot's navigational system except that this can be used by someone driving a car.

What sets the c330 apart from other gps devices is its City Navigator software that comes preloaded with all the necessary maps and routes for any destination of your choice. It has an intuitive touch screen that is visible in strong sunlight and its big color display screen makes it very easy on the eyes. It provides automatic route calculation to any destination you have in mind. While the maps can be zoomed in and out, the device uses an algorithm that adapts efficiently to the speed of your PDA or laptop which prevents any irritating slowing down when in use.

Now the device looks good, with a designed aimed at simplicity and no extra complicating buttons, with a 3.5 inch diagonal color screen, it weighs a little over 9 ounces, highly portable and is easily kept in the vehicle with the lever activated suction windshield mount. It has got a backlit display and an odometer which comes in handy as it can determine how far one has traveled up to 1/100th of a mile. The touch screen interface is highly user friendly and provides route planning along with re-routing options.

It can be connected to any other electronic device with its USB cable. Its rechargeable lithium battery provides for up to 4 hours of battery life and it doesn’t get heated up either. There is also an external connector for better signal reception. The navigation features are really straightforward and simple, all the maps come preinstalled and other maps of any cities can be loaded and stored with its SD card slot.

Your choice of interest points can be marked on the device such as restaurants, movie theatres, gas stations and anything else you could possibly want to know. Finding your way has never been easier. Garmin has always provided quality devices in navigation; they have succeeded once again with their c330.

You may not know which direction you're headed in but Garmin's 2720 gps pilot pioneer street system can definitely tell you where you currently are. The Street system is one of the newest in navigation technology that Garmin has launched. The small device as big as one's hand navigates you to your destination with reliable and accurate information through any unfamiliar territory and is fast becoming one of the prime candidates for the latest in navigational softwares and gps devices.

The highly user friendly interface allows you to download various street maps directly onto the Street System depending on your current location or your intended destination, also the cached memory allows you to save your previous destinations for future reference. The 2720 Garmin gps pilot pioneer street system becomes your personal guide with voice instructions once you have entered the desired destination and this works well as it allows you to continue driving safely without any distraction.

The 2720 Garmin gps pilot pioneer street system has this feature that makes life really easy for any type of driver, it allows the user to mark out different and identify different areas such as school zones, the fire department, police stations, safety areas etc. Or if you want a bite to eat and need to fill up your tank on the way you can add markers for all the restaurants, resorts or movie theatres you have been to or intend to go to the next time around as well as your local gas stations. Your very own entertainment patrol that tells you where you want to go and never forgets the route.

On a more economical note, the 2720 Garmin gps pilot pioneer street system allows you to dictate the route you want to choose, a more fuel efficient route or a direct traffic free route, or more often combining both. The navigational software built into the interface allows the user to anticipate possible problems where traffic is concerned that may hinder the driver along the way. Tell the Street System what you want, your wish is its command, it will give it to you. This definitely makes life loads easier for everyone. For the world's environmentalists choosing a shorter route reduces the amount of petrol emissions as well. Entertainment markers, safety, and the Garmin name. What more can one want!

Get out of the street!

For crying out loud! Didn't your mother tell you NOT TO PLAY IN THE STREET! Most people may not know this, but the Holiday Season is PRIME TIME for CRIME! Crime can happen anytime, anywhere, but from my experience as a cop in Southwest Florida, the Thanksgiving through Christmas holidays were always exceptionally active for the bad guys.

I am sure all the psycho analyzers will give you all the reasons, from poor socio-economic upbringing to some guys just want things and can't afford them so they take them. It's not really their fault, its society's fault.

Yes, we were swamped with burglaries too, the bad guys doing the "reverse Santa Clause". We had a lot of Armed Robberies too, mostly Restaurants! More about those next time.

Today I want to talk about Purse snatching. Some days we would work one purse snatch after another. During Christmas week, my department would assign all the juvenile officers to work the malls and shopping centers. Sometimes we would be on foot, sometimes in cars, and several years we were assigned bikes. One year a local scooter rental company loaned the sheriff a dozen red Scooters! It was better than getting flat feet and we could get around quicker, but boy did we get laughed at! Some of us, not me, looked like big teddy bears dressed in green riding little red scooters. At least the colors were in the right season!

OK, back to the crime at hand. Most purse snatchings went down like this. The lady would be walking to her car after shopping. She would be pushing a shopping cart full of Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas cheer. Her purse would be slung over one shoulder or WORSE, sitting up in the child seat of the shopping cart! And still worse, she would be walking right down the middle of the parking lot driving lane! The bad guys come cruising through and spot the victim. Mostly they work as a team, rarely by themselves. One drives while the other leans out of the car grabs the purse off the shoulder or from the shopping cart and takes off!

If the victim tries to hold on, and most did, they get a case of parking lot road rash, or worse. Now believe it or not, I am in this case telling you a stun gun will not help you. An AR15 assault rifle outfitted with a grenade launcher would do pretty good, but you might have some collateral damage.

Get OUT of the STREET! We see this in every parking lot! Young and old, rich and poor, they walk right down the middle, slow as possible, not a care in the world except how much they just spent on groceries.

Get OUT of the STREET!

If there is a way to walk between the parked cars, go there. If there is a way to walk as close as possible to the other parked cars go there. KEEP your purse out of sight or away from the potential reach of the bad guys. If you are walking to the right side of the driveway, put your purse on the right shoulder, again, away from the potential reach of the snatcher.

Better yet, wear youR coat OVER the purse. again Out of sight! Lets back up and ask, where was your purse while you were in the store? Was it in shopping cart while you looked around? This is a case of make it harder for the bad guys and they will go after easier pickings.

Think survival! Be prepared. Don't live in fear! You will not live in fear if you are prepared. Train yourself, work with a partner. Practice, think up scenarios then act them out so you will be prepared if you should ever be confronted.

With practice and preparedness, you will survive and NOT live in fear.

Paul Foreman

Bio

Paul Foreman is a retired Deputy Sheriff from Southwest Florida. Paul writes about personal safety, & self defense, including "non lethal" self defense. Paul and his wife JoAnn operate www.YourDefenseStore.com where they offer a large variety of non lethal self defense items such as stun guns, pepper sprays, gels and foam. Some very unique items are stun gun cell phones that look just like a cell phone or Stun Gun flashlights that look just like a common flash light. Other items include surveillance cameras, and nanny cameras. The web site also has diversion safes. These are safes that look just like normal household items such as books, clocks, or picture frames.
Paul experience as a Deputy Sheriff, gives him personal insight into self defense issues and how to survive today's mean streets. Paul served in the patrol division where he was an FTO, or Field Training Officer where he taught the new recruits before they were allowed to patrol by themselves. During the last five years before retirement, Paul served in the Juvenile Unit where he was assigned to a program called " Alternative to Suspension". In this program, Paul taught a class to students who had been suspended from school for various things such as fighting or disrupting school. Paul's curriculum taught these students how to make better choices and as Paul called it "How to stop making your teachers so mad at you".
